The vetiver plant (Vetiveria zizanoides), a perennial herbaceous plant of the Poaceae family, grows in tall clumps that can reach up to two meters in height. The leaves are narrow and long. It is native to southern India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, but today it is also cultivated in Haiti, the Philippines, and Brazil.
Its essential oil, with a fresh and intense scent and a persistent sweet undertone, is obtained by steam distillation of its roots.
In India and Sri Lanka, the essence is known as “the oil of tranquility.”
Its numerous functions are: detoxifying for oily and blemish-prone skin; stimulating peripheral circulation; anti-stress and antidepressant, thus helping to relieve stress and nervous tension.
