Melissa (Melissa officinalis) belongs to the Lamiaceae family and grows in the Mediterranean basin, preferring cool areas.
The essential oil is extracted from the leaves and flowering tops and has a fresh aroma, very similar to lemon. It is one of the earliest known medicinal herbs; Paracelsus, the Swiss physician and alchemist who lived between the 1400s and 1500s, called it the “Elixir of Life.”
Its functions are multiple: strengthens a weakened immune system; relaxes and balances hormonal imbalances; soothes agitation and insomnia; alleviates skin irritation after insect bites; in general, the plant is known for its calming and relaxing properties.
